GREENBRIER, AR – The Confederate flag on an 18-year-old’s rib cage raised a red flag to a military recruiter.

Covered in camouflage, Anthony Bauswell said he is like most country boys. He likes the outdoors where he can hunt and fish. Pride in his upbringing is shown in his tattoos.

“I got a Browning buck right there on my chest,” Bauswell said.

To show pride in his country, he walked into the Conway Marine Recruiting Center to enlist on Jan. 18. The process stopped after he revealed another tattoo.

A Confederate flag with the writing “Southern Pride” is on his left rib cage area. Bauswell learned that disqualified him from further consideration.

“As soon as I said ‘rebel flag on my left ribs,’ he says DQ, just automatically, DQ,” Bauswell said. “I felt pretty low that my own government wasn’t going to let me serve my country because of ink that’s in my skin.”

An attempt to contact the recruiting center Jan. 20 was unsuccessful because it was closed.

The Marine Corps’ tattoo policy reads, in part: “Tattoos/brands that are sexist, racist, eccentric or offensive in nature, express an association with conduct or substances prohibited by the Marine Corps drug policy and the uniform code of military justice, to include tattoos associated with illegal drugs, drug usage or paraphernalia are prohibited.”

In the same policy, tattoos in certain locations on the body are not allowed, such as on the hands, fingers and wrists. The Marine Corps also has a tattoo poster on some websites with the slogan “Think Before You Ink.”

The recent high school graduate said he did not believe those terms applied to his tattoo, but he understood the stigma with the Confederate flag.

He hopes his pride for his country can be expressed in service and not just remain skin-deep.

“I definitely don’t want to see racism, which is 90 percent of the reason why I put ‘Southern Pride’ on it,” he said. “I kind of felt like I had a plan for my life, and now that I can’t go I am not sure where I stand.”
